kuhla
So here we go, sprouting from the "ahh memories" lan party thread where malaphax brought up the idea of having alcohol at the next new year's eve lan party (whenever that is). I am hoping to see what everyone's views are on alcohol are. Here are some ideas of what I would like to hear you all talk about.... ------ What do you think about alcohol's use in today's popular culture? What do you think is the porper use of alcohol? Legal constraints? Have you partaken of alcohol on any occasion? Yes? No? If no, why? How much did you drink? ------ Growing up in a german family its rather hard to not partake of alcohol, specifically beer. The way by which it is drank is rather different though, or at least the culture around it, seems to be. In germany its (imho) treated more like coffee. Have a cup (bottle) or two as a social drink. I know your going to think its the same here but people seem to mostly drink it here for the alcoholic effect instead of as it is .... just a drink just like 7up or tea. It doesn't seem to carry any of the same stigma. Having a beer here is like WOWA LOOK OUT NOW big deal. In fact, thats something that has been really bugging me both in high school and here at the university but that is for another topic on another day. I am not saying that one should never drink alcohol for the sake of it's effects. I have never been really drunk but I have been pretty tipsy before (trying typing tipsy, and also try saying that 3-times fast, its pretty damn hard). I recognize that it does loosen you up a bit which CAN (I emphasize "can" not "will") lead to a more relaxed, carefree time. When you cross the line to drunk, thats another story. I think being drunk is rather stupid. You are seriously harming your body, have little to no control over your actions (or so I have been told) and are being irresponsible (lol... the i-word...). I don't like the idea of being out of control. As it stands the age limit is a bit high here in the US imho. In most parts of the rest of the world, everyone is having alcohol at a seemingly younger age. In germany (I keep talking about it only because I have had so much experiance with it there) you can purchase it and drink it (albeit not totally legally but no one cares) as young as 14-15. However, it is hard for me to say that the age limit should be lowered here when its easy to see that the dropping of such a limit would be so heavily abused right now. NOTE : I really had planned to write more... but I really need to go right now to class sooooo maybe later.....
Malaphax
Yes I drink... mostly because I like certain beers as well as just as a social drink. I agree with kuhla wholeheartedly about the high drinking age... Now for the English perspective... From what i understand you can order beer at a restaurant (with a meal) at the age of 14. You can actually buy beer legally at 18 (however much like germany most people won't card you or care as long as your not hauling off a keg of the stuff...) Also in england alchohol is much more carefree, one such example would be at newyears or a celebration, even children as young as 8 or 9 will be given a glass of champaigne (although some parents water it down). Personally drinking is no problem... hell i could care less if people get drunk. I do however care when people drive/operate heavy machinery/ all the things you shouldn't do while intoxicated. If you drink and do something your not supposed too... well I hope you run yourself into a brick wall at 60mph and cause no injuries to anyone else except for yourself and remove your genes from the genepool. ImCoolerThanRichard
Yeah, i drink as well. I'lll drink socially and in a more, drink-to-get-drunk attitude as well. I also agree that the drinking age is way too high. If people want alcohol, it's ridiculously easy to get pre-21.
kuhla
lol... did you guys read my entire post? I am against dropping the age limit in this country until the culture around drinking changes... However, it is hard for me to say that the age limit should be lowered here when its easy to see that the dropping of such a limit would be so heavily abused right now.
