Anime I want to see and am watching now.

The only two shows I'm semi interested in from this current season are: Last Exile Fam.... and Mirai Nikki. I only watched one episode of mirrai nikki but I'll probably download a bit more during break. Last exile is somewhat similar to the first one. So it involves small children being ridiculously good pilots.

I am currently watching mirai nikki and last exile fam. Both are pretty good. Mirai Nikki is strange and semi horror/suspense, the main character is a whiny bitch (as to be expected), but the show is solid and from what I understand it's been very well adapted from the manga. Also it has several adult themes throughout the show and some great comedy moments to break it up from being super serious at all times.

Last exile fam is similar to the first, set many years later. The show is well paced and the animation is good. I will admit it's funny to see one military faction dominated by male commanders (the bad guys) and the other faction dominated by females (the good guys) who somehow have all female main characters and commanders and all male rank and file troops, yet they seem to win consistently. I don't know why they have this current theme but once you get past that and the 16 year old pilots it's not half bad.

I still have some of steins gate, I may end up watching/downloading more of that.

Also Nisemonogatari just started airing. It's still very well animated with weird cuts (quite a few less of them) and snappy fast paced dialogue. I enjoyed the first one and will more than likely enjoy this one as well.

Just a small update, I've been falling behind on mirai nikki, it was the "worst" of the 3 so it's going to be on backlog until i finish finals and get some free time.

Last exile is still doing alright.

Nisemonogatari. Oh boy. Part of me really likes the show, and thinks it's one of the best shows I've seen in recent memory. And the other part... well, let's just say that if you can't handle fan service, you might just want to man the fuck up and concentrate on reading. It has certainly stepped up the fan service scale, and there have been a few scenes which have actually made me somewhat aware of what I'm watching and it's proximity to soft core pornography. I'm exaggerating slightly, but yea... I think this is the new boundary for fan service. I thought Seikon no Qwaser was bad, but that was just gratuitous and pandering... this is a different thing all together.

I still have ergo proxy stored on my media drive. Have you watched durarara yet? What about mononoke? I realize my list is not perfect, but it does give you some ideas, especially everything with an 8 or higher.

I cleared through the finals portion of last exile. It was good, not great. Very similar to the first one, which was alright. I'm going through mirai nikki, which at times can be really adult and other times I just hate the main character so much I want to delete the entire series.

WAIT kuhla, I HAVE AN ANIME JUST FOR YOU:

Some random movies/ovas I found from thora:

http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=7478

http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=8595

I did end up finished mirai nikki, it got pretty ridiculous at the end but part of the ending redeemed the show a bit.

The only anime I am currently watching is Jormungand: http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=8842

I do like that show, it's reminiscent of black lagoon without the batshit craziness. It's more tactical, and the plot is rather amorphous, which is kind of nice. Also although it features a child soldier as one of the main characters the other members of the team are all adults and aside from some anime tropes they tend to act like them.

4193. I've been curious about that one. It has a low rating but I can't tell if that's because people saw "Miyazaki" and expected Hayao but got Gorou. Awfully big shoes to fill.

7487. Hmmmm. Just watched the trailer. Skeptical hippo. Looks pretty generic romance.

8595. I've only seen one Rurouni Kenshin show a long time ago. I barely remember any of it but I recall it was "ok" so I dunno.

Somewhat related although not technically anime.

I watched the first season of Avatar: Legend of Korra. While it's certainly much more young adult oriented than a vast majority of what I would go for it did have quite a bit of merit. The story line had a decent premise to it, the major conflict revolves around the benders and normal people and the oppression of one side against the other. There was some light romance, and a decent amount of comedy. The animation was pretty good, and some of the action was well done. However, the second half of the show went at warp speed, and they rushed the conclusion. That being said I'd like to give them some credit, I think they had to make this season rather stand alone and see if the interest was high enough to warrant animating the other 3 seasons they have planned. I certainly wish it was a bit less juvenile but it did in some ways beat my expectations.

Also I'm once again mentioning the two shows I will be watching this season:

Jormungand Season 2: http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=9076

Psycho Pass: http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=9127

Real world references in my anime?

Posted Image

I have to admit, I originally went in watching jormungand thinking it would be a bit of action and gunfights similar to black lagoon. While I hold black lagoon in rather high regard, and I respect it's storylines, Jormungand seems to be taking it to new levels. The second season has really ramped up into whole sections of information agencies and all sorts of different plans. They're talking about a satellite controlled external supply chain management system for military applications and quantum computing as well. I think this might be one of the best shows that's come out in the last year. Even if the first season is a bit lackluster, it's worth it so you can move into the second season.

Ok... let's see here.... latest attempt at a reasonable anidb search filter....

  • First episode has aired.
  • At least 5 reviews with a rating of at least 7.0
  • Themes Removed: Proxy Battles, School Life (which has many sub-themes).
  • Sort by aired date from most recent -> to oldest.

Link.

Hmmm. Literally nothing from 2012 apparently meets that criteria. There are apparently only 3-4 things per year that match that. A lot of stuff on that list I have either watched or am aware of. I think there are only a couple things that are on that list from mainstream hype alone.

Psycho Pass is going pretty well, it's close to finished.

Jormungand actually ended with a bit of a whimper, mostly because the big conclustion/resolution was done 3 episodes from the end, and it just wasn't planned out very well. Although I have heard it was true to the manga.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is pretty fun and entertaining for mainstream shounen. I have respect for the series since it's an old and established one. It's a mindless type of fun which I can appreciate once a week.

The new season of minami-ke (tadaima) is pretty good, not something you would be interested in kuhla but I find the series entertaining.

Also in reference to Chris' comments about deadman wonderland. The show was pretty mediocre, it was also super heavily edited. I'm sure if you downloaded bluray rips it would be much more graphic as it stands quite a few scenes were almost entirely blacked out screens because of the censoring laws. I don't particularly think it's a good show or that I would even recommend watching it.

Well I haven't been watching nearly that much anime recently but I'll go over some of the last shows I've finished up.

I grabbed Dimension W on a whim because I heard it was the best new show out this season, and it was absolutely mediocre. I don't recommend it.

I finished up Durarara, they finally ended the show, the second season was actually broken up into 3 parts and it got super wild at the end, but it was very enjoyable. It's over the top and nonsensical but a great load of fun.

So there's a new Berserk series: https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=11851

I've got good news and bad news. Let's start off with the good for a change. The show does a fantastic job of setting the tone of Berserk, there's violence, hedonism, rape, hopelessness, they managed to hit just about all of that in the first episode. I was worried they were going to try and clean up the series for tv, but they don't seem to have done much of that yet. As far as the bad news is concerned, the animation is shit. They've blended 3dcg with various filters as well as a few pure 2d scan and pan shots. Normally a show blows it's budget on the first few episodes to make an impression and then the middle of the series looks like crap and the round out the end on a strong note, but this looks really bad in parts of episode 1. I'm genuinely concerned that the quality of animation will bring down the show more than anything else. I'm also sad they elected to go with this hybrid 3dcg style, mostly because I've seen it used in other shows and this seems like an especially poor implementation of it, it looks worse then when they used it in the golden age movies as well.

As much as knights of sidonia wasn't a fantastic looking show, they used that style much better.

I've been watching this particular series: https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=11370

I have to say it's one of the better series I've seen in a long time. While the initial premise is stupid, it then proceeds to break nearly every single trope you would expect. If you're sick of main characters suddenly developing great powers or being the long lost heir to a kingdom or some other bullshit, this series is great. It starts a bit slow, but I'd recommend this even if you dislike the setting and some of the characters.

Oh lawd. I watched 2 episodes. It cannot be overstated how bad the animation looks.

Original Berserk is still the best Berserk in my mind.

The 100 Best Anime Movies of All Time

https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2017/01/the-100-best-anime-movies-of-all-time.html?a=1

I'm a little surprised at how many of those titles I have never heard of. To be fair, many of them are older and some of them are just a series of shorts but still I would have thought I would remember them being mentioned.

Watching 2 series currently

Kino no Tabi [Kino's Journey] (2017)  http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=12959
This is technically a sequel.  They will repeat 3 episodes from the original ( "Coliseum", "Land of Adults" and "A Kind Land" ).  Overall it seems like just an nice update to this universe.  I'm glad to see more of this series and they haven't gone overboard with it.
I still got a chuckle out of a girl and her talking motorcycle being surprised by a talking dog.

Mahou Tsukai no Yome [The ancient Magus' Bride] http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=12942

This is somewhat similar to mushishi, it's slow paced and involves magic in our world, with the main character learning her place in it.  I'm interested to see where it goes because it hasn't (yet) fallen victim to all of the tropes I would have expected.

Still watching this.  It's solid, but slow.  I recommend it as something similar to Mushishi, but less episodic.

I'm also watching this:
Violet Evergarden http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=12138

It's a little tough to describe this accurately.  I'd call it a period piece/romance but the romance is almost entirely unrequited and it's set in a sort of alternate reality that looks like europe around ww2 era.  The main character has almost zero emotions (yes, that trope) and is struggling to be understood as well as struggling to understand the world around her.
Aside from a boring setting/plot the artwork is gorgeous and the show is probably worth a watch for that alone.  Kyoani has a reputation for fantastic animation work and I think shows like this are well deserving of praise.

This season isn't half bad.  Big chart - sort as you like
http://anichart.net/Spring-2018

There's the second season of tokyo ghoul which is basically an action shounen complete with vampires that have silly powers.  It's actually not terrible, and I enjoyed the first season.
http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=13499

There's a remake of Legend of the Galactic heroes currently airing.  I'll give it a shot because the original is on many of the "top anime" lists I've come across (it's also old as fuck from 1997).
http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=11495

We're also due to get a movie and short series continuation of FLCL (2001).  Looking forward to this.
http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=13258
http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=12023

We got more Full Metal Panic (oh jesus the original is from 2002... we're resurrecting all the old shit).  I remember this series being really solid so I'll be checking out the new season.
https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=11731

I'm mildly interested in this series as well mostly because the Russo-Japanese war isn't exactly a common setting.

Status update.

Tokyo ghoul is chugging along, it's not great but not terrible.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is... really slow and not that great.  The two main characters are very young and brilliant tacticians on opposite sides of the war playing 5d chess with one another.  I have a feeling I'll end up dropping this if they don't flesh out something to keep it interesting.

Full Metal Panic is weird on multiple levels.  The story line starts right as the old series left off, It's very much being thrown into the deep end.  The animation/cg is good, but the plot is on the weak side.  I'll give them some credit, they managed some rather impressive character development in the recent episode.

Golden Kamuy is actually rather solid.  The show is very centered around the Ainu, which are an indigenous people I was completely unaware of.  I'm mostly watching this because of the unique setting.  I've heard some people recommend the manga because it's very detailed artwork, but I don't think that's gonna happen.

I gave in to my inner weeb this weekend.  I have heard that the new top of the line dragonball/naruto/one piece/bleach replacement is Boku no Hero Academia.  It has everything you could possibly want: a high school setting, people with super powers, obvious good/bad guys, a shitty little kid character who is secretly super strong and getting stronger (gotta power up over the next 100+ episodes), a school festival episode - which included a straight up battle arena segment, obvious hero rankings... I could go on but if you haven't thrown up on your monitor already it's because you were already watching this show.
If you're wondering just why I would put myself through all this garbage quality anime, the answer is simple.  I wanted something to watch with my brain most of the way off.  I managed to crush through 38 episodes in ~5 hours.  It doesn't help that they have a goddamn 3 minute recap at the start of every episode, and the story pacing is almost as slow as dragonball z.  The bright side is it's well animated and the fight scenes have been decent.  Like most of these major shounen anime, the side characters are more interesting than the main character.

On a more serious note, nearly every anime in my previous post will have a second season/continuation starting up shortly, so I will most likely pick up everything but Galactic Heroes because they decided to go from a 12 episode series into a 3 movie series and honestly the show wasn't good.

I've briefly looked at various anime lineups and goddamn are they depressing, I haven't seen anything really "good" in a long while.
I guess the fooly cooly continuations have released, I might grab those and see if it's as weird as I remember.

I recently finished Bungou Stray Dogs - https://anidb.net/anime/11523
There's 3 seasons and 1 movie, the movie is sorta standalone.  The characters are decent but it has it's slapstick moments.  The powers are moderately interesting and they try a weird angle of tying each person's powers to classic authors/literature - although that sorta falls apart sometimes.

Watching Vinland Saga as it airs.  https://anidb.net/anime/13945
I've heard this is predicted to be anime of the season and possible the year.  The art is solid, the storyline has a semi-unique setting because it's primarily revolving around vikings and danes, pre-unified England etc.  Basically the Last Kingdom but anime style.  The storyline seems fairly basic but I'm totally willing to give this a shot because I've heard the manga is really solid.

EDIT

I should also mention this series Kimetsu no Yaiba https://anidb.net/anime/14107

The show's plot is straight up shounen garbage, including calling out the super move names, but the art is really impressive

Now that Neon Genesis Evangelion (original tv series run) is on Netflix I've been watching that and quite enjoying the expanded character arc compared to what I saw on the Rebuild films. I feel the main character far more relatable in the anime run compared to the rebuild which might be the thought process difference between western and eastern audiences.
