kuhla
source - http://www.engadget.com/2015/07/02/chicago-netflix-tax/ Citizens of Chicago need to prepare themselves for a "cloud tax" that went into effect on July 1. The nine-percent tax to cloud services like Netflix, Spotify and Xbox Live is the result of an "amusement tax" ruling that items "delivered electronically" for entertainment purposes are subject to a tax that has traditionally been levied against the sale of concert tickets, sporting events and the like. The ruling does not affect the sales of movies, songs and games delivered electronically. So purchases from the iTunes store and Steam are not taxed. But, a subscription to Apple Music or Spotify is subject to taxation. If your streaming entertainment service of choice hasn't already started charging, you may have a few months before your bill goes up. The ruling gives companies until September 1, 2015 to comply. http://i.imgur.com/NR8Y7Pn.gif
Malaphax
And people wonder why our current tax system is complete bullshit. You could look at some similar taxes levied on blank recording media in other countries: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Private_copying_levy

kuhla
This is front page reddit right now but I liked it so I'm re-posting it. Warning: it is a long read. http://www.gq.com/story/the-last-true-hermit?src=longreads Not sure how much is fact and how much is fiction but I don't think that really would take away from it. Jedi2155
You're basically going to have to sue the government to prove negligence: http://www.alllaw.com/articles/nolo/auto-accident/legal-options-poor-road-conditions-damage-car.html At least thats what I read. Additionally: Uh huh.... Pao apologized earlier this week to the Reddit community after a mass online protest over the firing of Victoria Taylor, who staffed a popular feature. Pao has faced vitriol from Reddit users who called for her firing. The uproar didn’t spur the management change, which was a “mutual decision over a number of weeks,” Sam Altman, a Reddit board member, said in an interview. Pao, who will remain an adviser to the board through the end of the year, also called the decision mutual. “We had different views in the potential growth rate in users for Reddit this year,” she said in an interview. “We couldn’t come to an agreement on that and I decided to step down.”

Additionally: [reddit info] source - http://www.engadget.com/2015/07/14/reddit-vp-engineer-bethanye-blout-quits/ Reddit's VP of Engineering Bethanye Blount has quit after just two months on the job, telling Re/Code that she lost confidence in its new direction. "There are some very aggressive implied promises being made to the community -- in comments to mods, quotes from board members -- and they're going have some pretty big challenges in meeting (them)," she said. She didn't feel she could deliver on those promises, which include new subreddit mod tools and a content policy aimed at reducing harassment. ...... Well. I'm a little worried about the future of the site. I do use it a lot and I feel it's one of the better destinations on the web if you stick to the more useful subreddits. I don't really want it to change.

I don't say that lightly. Every beer I could possibly imagine was there and I expect just about any wine too. I'm not sure how valuable this information is in our current group but if you are ever on the hunt for something a bit more specific than what is available at your local grocer, alcohol related, then I would recommend visiting this store. I actually went there 2 weeks ago as well but I was assuming BevMo was the same story considering the size of BevMo. The reason I went was not for myself but rather one of my in-law's friends who owns a vineyard in Paso Robles.
kuhla
Anyone looking for an IT desktop support job? The company I work for is looking to hire another person (we lost a lot of people to promotions lately to other teams and desktop is spread thin right now) and we have been asked if we have a friend we would like to recommend. It is a solid company to work for in many ways. That being said, if you do want to put a name forward, I am going to want some kind of personal recommendation since my name will be attached to it. No six degrees of separation either. They are not very strict on certifications but experience will help a lot. Fast paced environment. Not a lot of downtime. Nobody got fired or left but my company is looking for more people. The same opportunity I mention in the quote above is available again. Same situation again. I've bolded the important part. I have been given the opportunity to personally put a name forward again which means I won't just put anybody's name forward. If you or someone you know well and you think is qualified is interested then talk to me. If you want someone else opinion about the job and work environment then ask Ben. Jedi2155
Since you've talked to my roommate Ivan who has a degree in CompSci from DeVry, do you think he would be a good match for the position? He does okay with PCs (built his own) and is definitely intelligent / respectful. He's been looking for a new job for a while now.
