Malaphax
http://anandtech.com/show/8773/asus-maximus-vii-impact-review-premium-gaming-z97-in-miniitx All of Asus' recent ITX offerings have been really solid. At this point I can safely say that if I do a full rebuild I will definitely move to an ITX setup.

Malaphax
I spoke with Kuhla about this the other night. The KL06 he posted: http://www.futurelooks.com/ces-2015-silverstone-kl06-micro-atx-chassis-unveiled/ That micro-atx update on my current TJ08 has the ability to host both a 240 and 120 rad. Allowing in theory for you to have a dedicated 240 and 120 rad to cool both the cpu and gpu. I thought you could do the same thing on the mini-itx Corsair 250D. And you can... http://www.anandtech.com/show/7710/corsair-obsidian-250d-case-review/3 While there is no real exhaust option (unless you start using 80mm fans) you can use the front 140 as either a 120 rad or 140 rad mounting point and then the side mounted 240 rad to cool both a cpu and gpu. I have been seeing more companies pushing out gpu brackets that fit their closed loops such as this from corsair: http://www.corsair.com/en-us/hydro-series-hg10-n780-gpu-liquid-cooling-bracket While it's a bit absurd to have 2 closed water loops as the only cooling in your case, it's kind of neat to think that the industry has created solutions like this to compete with custom water loops. Jedi2155
My coworker is seriously considering this case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811517029 It has a PCI-E riser to utilize full sized GPU's thats 90 degrees offset. http://www.pureoverclock.com/Review-detail/azza-z-mitx-case-review/8/ http://benchmarkreviews.com/20503/azza-z-csaz-103-mini-itx-case-review/
Malaphax
There have been other cases that have used riser cards to change up form factors. I'm refering mostly to this case by falcon northwest: http://www.falcon-nw.com/desktops/tiki I think these cases generally look taller/skinnier than more traditional fat/squat matx and mitx cases. That case is kind of neat but it looks like it runs into issues with gpu length (pretty standard) and problems with 240mm rad compatibility (that's the bigger issue). Honestly I'm just glad to see more oem pushing out nice enthusiast grade cases/parts for mini-itx. Smaller form factor seems to be a growing section, especially when the average person doesn't need 5 expansion cards and umpteen billion storage drives. I would just recommend that you coworker know exactly which gpu/psu and cooling options he plans on getting and double check compatibility before he goes for this case. You always have to be extra careful in smaller form factor setups.
Jedi2155
Well, since he knows almost nothing about computers (he had trouble distinguishing between i3/i5/i7 at one point) and just plays games, I'll doing most of the research for him so we should be okay. Jedi2155
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811853005 I like the look of this case quite a bit actually. Good at only $40.
Malaphax
This is technically an m-atx build rather than m-itx but it's still very impressive. kuhla
source with pictures - http://anandtech.com/show/9081/asrock-to-debut-mini-itx-haswell-e-at-cebit-x99e-itx-ac-with-usb-3-1 Was not expecting that. Not sure if I like it though. Doesn't seem like a good fit platform-wise.
Malaphax
Seems rather pointless to try and cram that socket onto an m-itx platform. The other issue I have is that if you placed a gpu on that board at least 2 headers are nearly inaccessible. Also they mention that this board has a narrow socket form factor which may lead to incompatibility for any after market coolers. I understand that compromises need to be made to fit most sockets on m-itx but this in particular seems to lack any sense. I would be hesitant to put x99 on anything under m-atx size. kuhla
source - http://www.techpowerup.com/212925/silverstone-ready-with-a-700-watt-sfx-l-power-supply.html SilverStone is flexing its engineering muscle, to woo the compact gaming PC community that the SFX-L form-factor of power supplies have arrived, and ready for multi-GPU. SFX-L is slightly bigger than SFX but significantly smaller than ATX. The company is ready with a 700-Watt PSU in the SFX-L form-factor. Part of the company's new line of SFX-L category with the SFX series, the lineup will be led by the 700W SX700-LPT, and possibly followed by lower wattage models in the future. The company pioneered this form-factor with the 500W SX500-LG, earlier this January. The new PSUs will likely have enough juice and straws for gaming PC builds with up to two graphics cards. The SX700-LPT will boast 80 Plus Platinum efficiency ratings and the company is expected to show them off at Computex 2015, this June Neat. kuhla
That MiniITX case is a marvel to look at. Have you considered obtaining one for yourself? I'm assuming you are talking about the DAN A4-SFX I linked above. Upgrade plans are on hold until I can get more value out of the upgrade since my current setup (spec link in sig) that I have had for years now is still doing the job well enough. If I was upgrading I probably still would not. As nice as it looks, and as small as it is, I'm guessing it will end up like many of the other crowdsourced/crowdfunded cases with a very high price, limited features, spotty availability, etc.

kuhla
HMMMM. I kind of like it. I have felt for quite a while now that desk space issues are usually not vertical (meaning there is room to grow in that dimension but not in horizontal or depth). Cables coming out the top has been done before though and the cable mess kind of worries me. Conversely I access the back of my PC too often for them to come out the bottom.
