Cell Phones & Service

The latest pixel's look pretty terrible on a hardware pricing standpoint. It wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't for the prices. I just don't understand the Pixel 4 XL's pricing.

I'm looking at:

Pixel 4:

Note 10s:
https://www.anandtech.com/show/14712/samsung-announces-galaxy-note10-note10

Comparing:

Pixel XL 128 to a Note 10+:

Price: $999 vs $1099

DRAM: 6 GB vs 12 GB

Storage: 128 GB vs 256 GB + MicroSD

Screen Size: 6.3" vs 6.8" (for 2 mm difference in size)

Refresh Rate: 90 Hz vs. 60 Hz

Battery: 3700 mAh vs 4300 mAh

Charging: 18W vs 45W

Rear Cameras: Dual (missing Wide Angle) vs Triple (not going to get into details)

Front Camera: 8MP vs 10MP

WiFi: 802.11ac vs. 802.11ax aka WiFi 6

And Samsung also has:
 reverse charging (WPC & PMA),

Dealing with T-Mobile for something with my mom has reminded me how incredibly annoying it is to deal with one of the big mobile providers is.

Quote

-Is there international roaming on this plan?
Yes
-Data too?
Yes we have unlimited data roaming in many countries at no additional charge!
-At what speed?
It depends on the area and the country but we can provide up to full speed 4G LTE.
-So my current plan should allow for 4G assuming reception is not an issue?
No your current plan only goes up to 2G.
-*facepalm* So what changes do I need to do to make my phone work while roaming internationally to have 4G supported on my plan?
We have international roaming add-ons that can be temporarily added to the account while travelling for up to 30 days.
-And how much does that cost?
*quotes a number that doubles the current month's price*
-I GUESS I WILL TAKE THAT

I should just move her over to Google Fi. One plan. No confusion. No addons. None of this bullshit.

google fi indeed. i use mint and it seems pretty reliable. i stream youtube and music on my commute seems to work just fine. i mean some dead spot but minimal.

wouldn't recommend for international use tho. too expensive.

i would jump to google fi or local mobile service for international use.

The Pixel 4 is pretty underwhelming overall. I don't think it deserves any more mental energy than that.

I did not realize the level of underwhelming until I looked at the numbers.

So the fact it has a fingerprint sensor and a headphone jack is still amusing, all because it's a "mid-range" phone.

I'm less concerned about the single rear camera because all Google phone cameras are primarily software based at this point, not to mention the pixel 4's second camera is pretty useless.

possible new info about pixel 4a

  1. Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 (octa-core)
  2. No 5G support
  3. 5.7-5.8-inch single hole-punch display
  4. 3.5mm headphone jack
  5. USB Type-C port
  6. rear fingerprint scanner
  7. single rear camera

looking good so far

I'm curious if they are going to do 4GB RAM or 6GB RAM or something wierd like 5GB RAM
