The headset specs are literally identical to the standard cosmos.

The screen may be the same but there are some differences.

The elite comes with two base stations and there is a different layout of the external cameras on the headset.

Either way, it's $900 so expensive.....

HP today announced it is building a new VR headset, called Reverb G2, in collaboration with Valve and Microsoft.

....

I bet it is going to be expensive but Microsoft AND Valve are involved with this too? This will probably be something special.

That's a decent comparison between a basic lenovo windows mixed reality headset and the valve index.  His biggest complaints are some comfort issues with the lenovo headset and some of the fiddle software issues with using both the windows software and the steam software.  He also specifically recommends the samsung odssey+ at the end of the video as being the best of the windows mixed reality headsets available (at this point it's basically sold out).

tl;dr - even the most basic VR headsets are still plenty adequate to play through VR titles.

Mostly yes but there has been a tiny bit of restocking lately: https://new.reddit.com/search/?q=title%3AOdyssey subreddit%3Abuildapcsales&t=month

I really need to play Alyx if I ever get around to it.

I am multiple hours into the game but not done yet. I am not trying to sprint through it. I don't have a ton of VR experience but I have mostly enjoyed Alyx except for a couple of frustrating, unintuitive (imho) puzzels. I just don't seem to have as many "deep immersion" moments like some people and I don't know if it's the tech or in my head. I have read many posts by other saying this is "the killer app" for VR, that it is a very good example of what can be done and sales of VR headsets are up so maybe that is proof.

Some additional info on the HP Reverb 2 which kuhla mentioned is partly developed in collaboration with Microsoft and Valve: $600, includes headset and controllers.
https://uploadvr.com/hp-reverb-g2-features/
https://uploadvr.com/new-hp-reverb-g2-specs/

  • 2 x 2.98″ LCD panels
  • Resolution of 2160 x 2160 per eye
  • 90 Hz refresh rate
  • A field of view of 114 degrees
  • 4 cameras, providing 6DoF inside-out tracking
  • Valve-designed lenses
  • Physical interpupillary distance (IPD) lens adjustment from 60mm – 68mm
  • Integrated off-ear speakers (same as on Valve Index)
  • Dual microphones
  • Redesigned Windows Mixed Reality controllers
  • Replaceable magnetic fabric face cushions
  • 6 meter desktop cable

Edit - unrelated but cool addition to half life alyx 1.4

Solid evolution all around for Windows MR and that price makes sense. Not cheap, not entry level, but also not too high ($800+).

The resolution per eye is competitive with even the very best out there right now even in the commercial space if I remembering correctly.

I bet the two extra side cameras will help a bit especially with tracking the controllers.

IPD adjustment is a basic feature I feel should be on every headset.

Controllers will get the job done but they are a little boring. I kind of hoped they would push a little farther with those like Valve style knuckle wraps or something.

hmm hoping for the index price to come down.

I doubt that's going to happen any time soon.  Honestly the knuckles controllers seem to be the best feature of the index.  I think the lighthouse tracking is a better solution in theory, but I've seen some rather odd issues present even when you add lighthouse units to try and go for full body tracking - see example

I know lighthouse setups, like the Index uses, are just plain better for performance but just don't want to have to mount units and run wires......

Inside out tracking with multiple cameras is just so much more convenient even if it has some limits.

Again, I think the lighthouse setups can be better, but as you mentioned, they require more work, and if you're looking to take advantage of full body tracking with a lighthouse setup, you're going to need more than 2 lighthouse units.  The inside out tracking is really good, and performs way above what my personal expectations are - in the video I posted comparing the index to the lenovo WMR, you can see he tests how accurate the tracking is even when moving the controllers behind his head, and it still performs well.
Also as you mentioned the additional setup needed for lighthouse style tracking is substantial, not just extra cables and mounting but having to dedicate a play space to VR.

The controllers on the other hand... clearly the standard style WMR controllers aren't great, aside from no finger tracking they also do prevent certain movements due to the bulky tracking units on the top.  The classic example being trying to rack the slide on a pistol in half life alyx - you end up smashing controllers together trying to complete the motion, but the index's knuckles don't have that limitation - of course they are $280 separately which is more expense than some low end VR setups, especially when they're on sale.

Again, I feel like we're still in the early generations of VR, and we'll probably see improvements over the next 2-3 years, and hopefully some additional VR games that take advantage of a growing VR segment.

It definitely has more room to grow but I wonder at what pace. I still feel quite strongly that it will always remain a minority of gaming market so I assume the funding for it is going to be similarly limited. VR is just too physically and mentally demanding to compete with the couch+controller gaming.

So this did eventually come out:

Seems pretty good. The pricing is important. More than entry level ($300-$400) but still a lot cheaper than top end ($1000)
