Different laptop but related to the topic, add ~$100 and you get a number of upgrades (i3 -> i5, 4gb -> 8gb, 500gb hdd-> 128gb ssd) in the laptop below vs the one in the OP. I would argue it's a better value than the Asus.

$460 - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CGGOZOW/

HP 15-ay013nr
Intel Core i5 6200U, 2.3GHz, 2 cores 4 threads (Skylake)
Intel graphics HD 520
8GB DDR3
128GB SSD
15.6", 1080p screen

Same idea as this previous post: I was a little surprised to see this randomly linked and to see how much laptop you can buy for around $450.

Is this machine aimed for a parent?

I'm not sure who it's really aimed at. Both the CPU and GPU are relatively new and a little beefier than I feel is really needed for your average casual user so I was surprised to see something like that under the $500 mark. EDIT: and I forgot to mention that 1080p screen res is unfortunately still not 100% standard in budget laptops
