The year is 872, and many of the separate kingdoms of what we now know as England have fallen to the invading Danes, leaving the great kingdom of Wessex standing alone and defiant under the command of King Alfred. Against this turbulent backdrop lives our hero, Uhtred. Born the son of a Saxon nobleman, he is captured by the Danes and raised as one of their own. Forced to choose between the country of his birth and the people of his upbringing, his loyalties are ever tested. What is he? Saxon or Dane? On a quest to reclaim his birthright, Uhtred must tread a dangerous path between both sides if he is to play his part in the birth of a new nation and, ultimately, recapture his ancestral lands.

It's an adaptation of a book: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Kingdom

Actually watching this after Ben mentioned it a while back. Again looking for something casual to watch I checked it out. I'm a good number of episodes in and I like it. Pretty easy to watch. I don't know if I would call it good but it's not bad. Main character is a bit mary sue. They rail on the christian church of the time much more than I expected. Pace is pretty quick. Production values are decent.

Finished up the third season.  The show is still solid.  I hope they keep the show going because it feels like a good balance between a big budget fantasy series and a more historical based docudrama.

Finished the third season. I think this was the best season yet. Everything felt more polished and nuanced, multiple interweaving storylines, many characters, etc. Good show.

Finished the latest season. Enjoyed it. Had an OK ending. They are supposedly doing more but I have no idea why.

When the show is good, it's good. When the show is bad, it's bad. A lot of flipping back and forth.

I would recommend this show only if someone can deal with occasionally cringe scenes and also if this historical time period, which don't think is visited too often, has some interests to them.
