T1no
http://www.vwvortex.com/news/volkswagen-news/volkswagen-introduces-new-turbocharged-direct-injected-1-4-tsi-for-jetta/ The 1.4-liter TSI® engine in the Jetta features a 10.0:1 compression ratio, direct fuel injection, and turbocharging to produce 150 hp at 5000 rpm. This engine’s turbocharging system offers incredible boost response thanks to its cleverly designed intake manifold, which enables the use of a surprisingly small, single-scroll compressor. The intercooler, uniquely, is integrated directly into the injection-molded induction pipe. This design generates maximum torque of 184 pound-feet at 1400 rpm. kuhla
I've always found some of the smaller displacement engines to be more interesting. Always nice to hear them wringing a little more out of a small engine but honestly I feel like VW is a little behind on this. Some other companies have had comparable engines for a couple of years now. The current Jetta gets 24/33 mpg.

Jedi2155
Not that surprising to me as I've been clamoring about the issues with diesels inherently high NOX emissions for years.

Considering how large of a company Volkswagen is this will probably be enough to completely wreck their corporate board and upper level executives. Aside from the $18 Billion in fines they face, I imagine everyone will also line up for lawsuits against them, and the loss in sales for their brand will also be substantial. Right now every other German car brand is doing their absolute best to distance themselves from VW. This looks pretty close to catastrophic, I sincerely hope that VW is able to pull through this, but I have a feeling it's going to be rough for a while. T1no
soo what they would do to customer car ? recall and fix the problem ? reduce performance ? buy back ? lol unless you're a vw enthusiast you prob would steer away from VW completely or just TDI line up. Malaphax
They're going to issue recalls for all Diesel cars affected by this. I would guess that the "repair" proposed by a recall will reduce performance. If you actually owned one of these TDIs, I personally would either ignore the recall or go for a buyback (if offered). Since the recall has a good chance of reducing the performance, my bet is that people will be offered a buyback as well. Honestly even if I were a VW enthusiast I would have a hard time rationalizing a purchase from VW/Audi. Their entire company is going to be hit with huge fines, recalls and buybacks, I would expect this to affect other aspects of their business and other lines of vehicles. Jedi2155
http://jalopnik.com/your-guide-to-dieselgate-volkswagens-diesel-cheating-c-1731857018 That article sums it up quite nicely. Simply put, they didn't put a Urea tank in their smaller 2.0L engines and believed they could get away with it by simply changing the ECU, however this only applies during testing and not during normal usage. ... if VW is able to develop a fix and get it approved, the performance and fuel efficiency of their cars might fall. That’s more likely if the fix is only a software update, which would be far cheaper for Volkswagen. If VW ends up having to make software changes and retrofit an entire SCR system to the cars (other than the Passat TDI)—something that would likely cost it thousands of dollars per car—performance would likely be unchanged, but interior volume might be reduced to accommodate a liquid-urea tank and associated plumbing.
