Rasterized performance is basically the same and raytracing is slightly better. The performance of the 3000 series seems genuinely really good, especially compared to the 2000 series cards, which many people were disappointed with. But we're still running into serious supply constraints. There was also some news reported a while back about Nvidia selling cards directly to crypto-miners which further depressed retail supply, but that's the sort of raw capitalism I would expect from a publicly listed company. They also were selling serious amounts of 1000 series cards to miners so it's not anything new. I initially thought it was samsung's fab that was causing the bulk of the delays but it sounds like there are other wrinkles in the supply chain, I'm not sure it's that's lingering effects of covid-19 on chinese production or general issues with international shipping. Considering Nvidia isn't alone with their supply issues, I'm curious if the middle of 2021 is when we'll start to see a rush of supply for all these products that launched in 2020 (Playstation 5's, AMD 6000 series, Nvidia 3000 series, etc.) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Lunar new year is also going to make matters worse because of production shutdowns/reduction for ~2 weeks. I've been halfheartedly keeping up to date on supply and sales for 3000 series cards and my understanding is that Bestbuy did implement halfway decent botting protection on their digital storefront. Plenty of other companies have implemented a queue system which seems to be working (slowly). I'm glad to see more retailers are starting to take anti-botting seriously and there's still rumblings of additional legislation to penalize scalping. I think we may end up seeing these queue and anti-botting systems become even more prevalent, especially for high demand items in the future. To provide some additional context, Nvidia isn't alone in this and auto manufacturers are also feeling serious pain, with cars being fully assembled but no ECU/infotainment electronics available to install. Jedi2155 Posted February 10, 2021 Report Share Posted February 10, 2021 i called it being out of stock until Q1 2021, I was wrong and I think its going to be worse than that...might be Q2 likely with real supply not coming in until Q3 maybe even its a perfect storm of everything New gen cards that are actually good upgrades Huge new demand from crypto miners Pandemic causing people to stay home and invest more in home entertainment Pandemic causing supply chain shocks due to reduced initial investment Pandemic causing increased demand from other semiconductor users Trump Chinese Tariffs blocking traditional Chinese fabs so increased demand for Samsung/TSMC products means even higher demand I bet I'm missing a few other ones as well but its getting hit by literally every side which way up and down. I understand why Nvidia is doing this and why they're selling mining specific cards/gpus as well. However I don't think this is the solution. I doubt this will even dent the supply issues that the 3000 series is having. I'm not trying to defend miners but this type of behavior limiting what you can do with your own hardware is wrong. There are already limits on how many nvenc streams geforce cards can utilize (I believe it's 3) compared to quadro cards (10 or more) and that type of behavior is incredibly anti-consumer. The other thing is if they're using the same chip design, they could improve yields by saying oh this feature XYZ doesn't work on this chip when its normally required by gamers, I can still sell its as a mining card and vice versa etc. This has potential benefits there as well. Full load power is like 325-400 Watts Idle consumption with 1 display is ~ 40 watts Idle consumption with 3 display is ~ 40 watts (Primary @ 120 hz, 1 secondary @ 60/75 Hz) Idle consumption with 3 display is ~ 80 watts (Primary @ 120 hz, 1 secondary at 120 Hz) Idle consumption with 3 display is ~ 100 watts (Primary @ 120 hz, 1 secondary at 144 Hz / 165 Basically the GPU with higher refresh rate second displays cannot ramp down to 210 core / 100 MHz RAM clock but stays at an elevated level you see below. Nvidia is cutting back production so I doubt inventories of new cards are going to get any better, I'm seeing MSRP or slightly discounted cards available online and in-store, supposedly in China cards are going for 20% below MSRP and 38% below MSRP for flagship models. source 4000 series is almost certainly going to sell out at launch, plus we're seeing massive power requirements for 4000 series. Malaphax Posted July 13, 2022 Report Share Posted July 13, 2022 I've heard rumors that they overproduced 12gb cards and Nvidia cut production of those first because they need to sell off the older 10gb stock. I think we're in a weird spot, I don't think we're going to see much more price decline (not to China's level of 20% under MSRP) but I do think we're going to see stock slowly dry up as we approach the 4000 series announcement. If there's any stock when 4000 series hits, and subsequently sells out, it's going to get snapped up by everyone else. If you really want to roll the dice you could try and wait for the used market of 3000 series cards when some people upgrade to 4000 series, but considering how poorly that went with 2000 series used cards, I'm not sure that's a bet I would recommend taking. If you're buying new, there is further opportunity for price drops I think but I don't think it will be significant as what Malaphax has mentioned already.
