Visually speaking, the recent Tomb Raider game was pretty damn solid. I will be looking at picking up the sequel either during the upcoming winter sale this year or a bit later.

The real thing I want to try out is they've supposedly allowed much more stealth approaches to combat, even going so far as to allow complete stealth and non-lethal options. I'm interested in how well that interacts with their big set piece moments.

On another note. Steam released their Steam Machines and Controllers, they also have a sale on games that make good use of big picture and playing from a couch:

I'll probably order a steam controller because I want to see how it feels in comparison to a standard style xbox controller. The sheet amount of customization on the steam controllers is going to provide some serious value as well.

i was playing cs with ben yesterday and this guy would hide and be the last one alive; when everyone else is dead he start blasting eye of tiger and go around killing. with the idea of clutching every goddamn round. but then he never did. but it was just too funny. i wish i got him on video.

Blizzard released their latest Heroes of the Storm character. Cho'Gall.

The interesting part is that because he is a two headed ogre, two players control him at the same time. To limit teamwork issues, anyone wishing to play this character must be queued up with a second person.

The concept is very interesting, it looks like both Blizzard and Riot are getting more creative with their new heroes.

I've never played the system shock series either, but to my understanding it was a very strong basis for the Deus Ex franchise. The blend of RPG and FPS elements allowed a pretty broad range of characters you could create and use throughout the game. I'll see what the kickstarter looks like but I doubt I'll be backing it.

In other crowdfunding news. Lab Zero (dev behind skullgirls) new game was successfully crowdfunded: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/indivisible-rpg-from-the-creators-of-skullgirls#/

You can download a free demo, which I should probably do, just to check it out. I've always liked their animation work, it's some of the best out there.

Speaking of good animation. Guilty Gear Xrd - Sign is releasing tomorrow. Some notes about this. It is not the most recent version (I believe this is one release behind the current version) but the developer is porting it over themselves and looking to catch up to their console/japan release eventually. They're also giving anyone who purchases the game in the first month all DLC free (3 extra characters, color packs and voice packs).

Yea, what's funny about that is why it's happening now. Tribes was released and they tried to monetize the hell out of it to start making money. Then Hi-Rez pushed out smite, and took all the developers away from Tribes, leaving us with a game that was heavily monetized and all support being dropped. Now that Smite makes good money, a handful of developers from Hi-Rez are finally being allowed to continue doing some work on Tribes again, and some of the first things they're doing are fixing the various issues that the game had with monetization and classes/balance.

Am I glad that this is happening? Sure, but I feel very strongly that it's going to be too little too late. I still might fire it up and give it a shot, but I'm not sure how I want to handle my current gaming time right now, or if this might fit in somewhere.

I dunno if I posted this before but I use this list nowadays to follow upcoming PC game titles launch/release dates:

http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/release-date/coming-soon/pc/date

It doesn't have a lot of supporting media (trailers, articles, etc.) but it's compact, quick/easy to read and seems to be kept relatively up to date on all the major and just-less-than-major titles.

Otherland MMO is in early access on steam.

I will avoid this just like I avoid nearly all early access games, but I'll probably check youtube to see what some people post about it.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/376310/

EDIT: So it looks like otherland is in fact a broken piece of shit game pushed out to early access. I'm not even remotely surprised since I haven't heard anything about it's development for several years, but it sounds like it's completely busted and the devs are trying to push out fake positive reviews and deny steam refunds.

Another trailer for the new Homeworld: Deserts of Karak

Some big youtube names also posted up some previews of XCOM 2 recently. It looks really good and considering I thoroughly enjoyed the first one I'll definitely pick up this one.

EA is bringing their monthly subscription package to PC.

https://www.origin.com/en-us/store/origin-access

For $5 a month they provide access to a decent sized backlog of games and also provide you with exclusive demos for upcoming games. Back when battlefront launched everyone with EA access could play for 10 hours, a week before launch.

I'm glad to see EA is pushing for more feature parity by offering this for PC as well as console, but I don't currently have enough interest in their catalog to even consider this.

I'll be looking for more videos to come out when their beta goes live on 1/28-1/31. I'm still interested in this game and I'm seeing multiple sets of people compare it to Destiny, which leaves me with some trepidation.

Some people are bringing up Mass Effect 3's coop, and suggesting that it's a much better comparison and they hope The Division captures that frantic fun pace.

Some key notes about the game:

Only the pvp zone and main city will be populated with other players. The rest of the game will be treated as either single player or 4 man coop.

Bullet sponge enemies, headshot multipliers seems subdued.

General consensus is that this game feels more RPG than shooter.

Yea, I'm not sure about the amount of content or how quickly it becomes stale. I think there are a few factors they're trying to use to mitigate this, the skills/mods appear to be one of them. One of the issues with Destiny is that every class does roughly the same thing, which is damage. In this game there's a legitimate trinity of healing/tanking/utility.

I've heard the open world sections are neat enough to lightly explore on your way to a mission but each mission is very linear and focused. I don't particularly mind this, because I'm not as focused as some people are with exploration.

The gear grind and numbers grind is always an issue, it looks like the lower level content is tuned pretty badly. People are concerned that the higher level content might not be tuned very well and you end up with borderlands style combat where it can take 3-4 magazines to take down a tougher enemy let alone a big boss. As far as the grind itself, my hope is that the open world pvp zone will be interesting enough to break up some of the tedium of the coop missions. If the pvp is even halfway decent it might make things interesting, if it's garbage then people will fall back entirely to the coop. This is another game that will probably be great to play with friends but very mediocre to play solo. I've heard they have a rather robust LFG system in place which might help some of that.

Sidenote: Some people on reddit are suggesting that you can gain access to the pre-purchase beta by "buying" the game on Amazon, since they do not charge your card until release date and then cancelling the order once they send you a beta code. I might give this a shot.

Darkest Dungeon is releasing tomorrow, and Deserts of Kharak is releasing Wednesday. I will be playing/streaming both of these games.

Darkest dungeon is the only early access game I bought and this is partially because it has very positive reviews even in it's current state and the release date was coming up. What I've played so far is very fun and occasionally frustrating. The enemy/boss designs are interesting and the gameplay is pretty fun, it's one of the few turn based games that appeals to me.

Deserts of Kharak is looking interesting, but this is mostly a game I'm buying for the atmosphere. The music and cinematics look solid so far and if they can even capture some of the spark of the homeworld games (and their respective remasters) then I'll be happy. I'm slightly curious about the multiplayer but probably not enough to get seriously involved in it.

I've seen some topics on reddit about Black Desert. I'm somewhat interested in trying it out.

They also are allowing people to download and play with a stand alone character creator, this is due to the obscene levels of customization available in character creation. Any character creation made in the stand alone creator can be imported into the game at launch, Launch is estimated to be in March.
